The Vice Chancellor, UNSW Sydney noted that, ā€œThis new platform is needed now more than ever as the world grapples with providing a coordinated approach to tackling climate change.ā€

Prof. Matthew England, an oceanography and climate dynamics specialist with UNSW’s Climate Change Research Centre drew parallels between Climate change and the corona virus. He noted that both need early action that will make the process easier right through to the economy.

ā€œAnother is that this is a problem we can solve by coming together globally and within communities, sharing scientific knowledge but also understanding what we’re all going through across nations. We will solve Covid, and we can also solve climate change with enough of a coordinated effort.ā€

Member universities include theĀ California Institute of Technology,Ā Cornell University,Ā McGill University, theĀ University of Edinburgh,Ā King’s College London, theĀ Sorbonne University,Ā ETH Zurich, theĀ University of Hong Kong, theĀ National University of Singapore, theĀ University of Melbourne,Ā Monash University, theĀ University of SĆ£o Paulo, theĀ University of Ghana, theĀ ø£Ąū¼§, TERI School of Advanced Studies in New Delhi, the China University of Geosciences and the Fiji-basedĀ University of the South Pacific.

10 more institutions are expected to join the alliance. Member universities have been drawn from emerging nations with surging populations and energy needs, which were teetering between ā€œgoing for low-carbon sources of energy or making the mistakes we’ve made in Australia and the USā€, Professor England said.

The UoN Vice Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama welcomed the collaboration noting that as an institution in Africa, the University will bring the climate changes experienced in Africa to the global purview. He noted that as the university is dedicated to its core mandate of teaching, research and capacity-building it aims to prepare professionals who can masterfully respond to the nightmare of our times.

Read article here

climate change, Corona virus, pandemic

Fri, 03 Apr 2020 07:03:14 +0000 enekesa 444 at /news/uon-global-network-tackle-climate-change#comments Elimika Youth Programme Response to CoronaVirus (COVID-19) Pandemic: Keep Hope Alive /news/elimika-youth-programme-response-coronavirus-covid-19-pandemic-keep-hope-alive

At moments of distress, the call to renew hope in our nation, families, comrades and friends is critical.
Our clarion call at the moment should be to keep hope alive. Together, let’s search for knowledge, embrace it, understand it, and share it to fight the Coronavirus pandemic.
Let’s be bold, courageous, talk openly about the pandemic, analyse information, discard myths, get facts and avoid fear.
This is the age of modern technology. Information can be generated and shared to help save lives. Elimika is about knowledge, technology and sound utilization of both.
Combination of innovation, sound technology and faith will help us conquer COVID-19. (There is hope that research science is fast discovering solutions to combat COVID-19).
What are the facts?
(i) Wuhan, China has been opened up due to zero new local infections hence slowing down the infections rate. This means that we are currently experiencing temporary/partial lock-down. South Korea’s infections have drastically slowed down, and people have begun going back to their normal lives.
(ii) The current fatality rate is 4.3% (as on 23/03/20201.4 (from WHO).
(iii) 87% of the people infected have recovered naturally or and have been treated and discharged.
(iv) There are a combination of existing drugs that have proved to be successful and development of vaccine is at an increased pace.
(v) The partial shut-down will pose some social and even economic challenges to all of us. It is better to courageously face these challenges for a short period of time and save human lives.

Judith Mbula Bahemuka, PhD
UNESCO/UNITWIN Chair

Corona virus

Sun, 29 Mar 2020 16:49:04 +0000 enekesa 436 at /news/elimika-youth-programme-response-coronavirus-covid-19-pandemic-keep-hope-alive#comments
