The Problems of Kenyan female Youth in the Novels of Moraa Gitaa

Moraa Gitaa is one ofÌý theÌý mostÌý prolificÌý andÌý well - knownÌý KenyanÌý womenÌý authorsÌý ofÌý theÌý new generation. Born and raised in Mombasa, she has worked for more thanÌý 15 years with various organizations, among them the British Council, Aga Khan Foundation and PEN Kenya Centre.
Gitaa won First Prize in the National Book Development Council of Kenya Adult Fiction literary award in 2008, was nominated for the 2010 Penguin Prize for African Writing, and was one of the Kenya Chapter winners of the 2014 Burt Award for African Literature.
In herÌý fictionalÌý works,Ìý whichÌý includeÌý fourÌý novels,Ìý aÌý numberÌý ofÌý storiesÌý andÌý aÌý secondaryÌý school reader,Ìý sheÌý managesÌý toÌý treatÌý aÌý wideÌý rangeÌý ofÌý issuesÌý topicalÌý forÌý modernÌý KenyanÌý society,Ìý andÌýespecially for theÌý youngerÌý generation,Ìý focusingÌý onÌý theÌý challengesÌý thatÌý hauntÌý youngÌý females.
Among the problems treatedÌý inÌý herÌý worksÌý areÌý drugÌý addiction,Ìý humanÌý trafficking,Ìý sexualÌý abuse, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, gender discrimination, inter-generational and ethnic tensions,Ìý economicÌý marginalization,Ìý HIV ÌýandÌý AIDS,Ìý corruptionÌý andÌý transnationalÌý crime.Ìý All these concerns are tackled by the author in the setting of her native Coastal province, –but the setting is also symbolically used as a microcosm for the whole country.
The paper analyses the four novelsÌý ofÌý Gitaa -CrucibleÌý forÌý SilverÌý andÌý FurnaceÌý forÌý GoldÌý (2008),Ìý ShiftingÌý SandsÌý (2012),Ìý HilaÌý (2014)Ìý andÌý SharkÌý AttackÌý (2017).Ìý
TheÌý paperÌý concludes that Gitaa’s works are notable not ÌýonlyÌý asÌý anÌý exampleÌý ofÌý socialÌý criticismÌý inÌý literature,Ìý butÌý alsoÌý asÌý inspirationalÌý textsÌý forÌý young readers.
